The paper presents a new use of geosynthetics for reduction of vertical swelling pressures by provision of Vertical Cylindrical Compressible Elements (VCCE) below and around the loaded areas. The lateral swelling pressure is reduced due to compression of VCCE. From the laboratory tests it was observed that the vertical swelling pressure reduces considerably by provision of VCCE. This technique can be used to control swelling pressures on the existing foundations. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 881647.
