While the mechanisms of soil erosion is well known (consisting of detachment, transportation and deposition) its control is largely empirical. An engineering approach to the design of Geosynthetics for erosion control on slopes can be based on the well known Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation RUSLE, which can be adapted to the estimation of erosion on a single slope or a defined area comprising of multiple single slopes. The use of RUSLE for designing with Geosynthetics requires the definition of the performance of the various products by laboratory and full scale performance tests. The paper introduces the general procedure for using RUSLE for the design of Geosynthetics for erosion control on slopes and presents examples of practical interest. Conclusions and recommendations are finally exposed.
