Studies carried out by several French laboratories on the frictional behaviour of geosynthetics in order to define a design method for slope stability of lining systems are described in the paper. The work programme, which has lasted since 1990, consisted of laboratory friction tests (large-scale shear boxes and inclined plan board) and of the improvement of an existing computer programme.
