The performance of a reinforced embankment constructed on soft clay is presented. The clay foundation and geosynthetic reinforcement (two types) were extensively instrumented to assess overall stability, the effect of reinforcement and monitor foundation movements. Observations at the end of fill placement are compared with traditional design techniques and the differences are discussed. Foundation coµsolidation during construction and mobilised fill strength are considered significant factors. Both reinforcements performed stiffer than index tests indicate. Finite element analyses using field derived parameters are compared with the observations. Long term monitoring indicates minimal decrease in reinforcement force.
