Design methods for geosynthetic-reinf orced unsurfaced pavements are shown to rely on the assumptions of static monotonic failure for design and that aggregate behaviour has no direct influence when predicting rut depths. The results of a full-scale haul-road trial in Scotland are used to illustrate the lack of validity of these assumptions and the importance of aggregate compression and shear defonnation in rut development.
