This paper presents and discusses the results of model reinforced and unreinforced unpaved roads subjected to large ruts caused by continuous maintenance. The presence of the reinforcement increases the bearing capacity of the road even for poor quality fill material. A change in the failure mechanism developed was identified as a function of the road height. Load spreading throughout the fill and pore pressures in the foundation were also assessed
